Summer of Wanderlust – India Inspired Look Book

To describe India in a few words is like trying to put the universe in a box. It just can’t be done.  To do it justice, one must visit and immerse themselves in the cacophony of sights, sounds, smells and colors. It’s brilliant and jarring, chaotic and magical.  In my two visits I have only scratched the surface of its mystery.

These looks are inspired by many of the pieces of jewelry and clothing I have purchased when traveling to India and also by the easy, comfortable way I would dress when I am there.  Light layers, exotic prints and bold colors are the heart of Indian design and they are the center of this look book!

Summer of Wanderlust – Morocco Inspired Look Book

Only two weeks left in our Summer of Wanderlust and I’ve left some of my favorite countries for last.

This week’s look book is inspired by Morocco.  My husband and I took a private tour by car through the vast landscapes of Morocco in 2006 from the forest through olive groves to a night spent in a Bedoin camp, watching the sunrise in the Sahara Desert.

Buying rugs in the desert, drinking mint tea, getting lost among mounds of spices in the markets of Marrakech, eating our share of tajine, covering my hands in henna, discovering beautiful details around every corner, meeting amazing artisans, uncovering hidden courtyards.  It was a magical journey and I can’t wait to return.  Until then, I leave with a little Moroccan inspiration.

Summer of Wanderlust – Greece Inspired Look Book

I have always dreamed of traveling to Greece, a land where the blue of the sky dances with the blue of the sea for as far as the eye can see.  This October I am blessed to be able to make that dream a reality so I thought I should get some outfit planning in the works.

This look book is inspired by the iconic Greek colors of blue and white in easy, flowy fabrics, paired with unique sandals and a healthy sprinkling of gold.  Channeling my inner Greek goddess with bare shoulders and billowing silhouettes, I am ready for my island adventure.

Summer of Wanderlust – Hong Kong Look Book

Sixteen years ago for my honeymoon I went on my first big international trip to Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong.  That trip forever changed the trajectory of my life and ignited a desire to travel the globe that is everlasting.

This look book is inspired by the details of Hong Kong, the place where my ultimate journey began.

Summer of Wanderlust – Bali Inspired Look Book

Bali is an exotic and tropical land with deep cultural traditions.  While I have yet to visit I am inspired by the intricate details of its temples, colorful ceremonies and the spirit of the Balinese people.

These looks are inspired by the traditional batik and lush landscapes found all over Bali.  They are my modern take on fashion inspired by Balinese elements.

I’d love to hear if you have been to Bali and what your favorite memory is!

Tropical Summer

Tropical motifs in fashion scream summer.  Whether its palm trees, pineapples or hibiscus flowers you can find tropical prints on just about every clothing item these days. What I love most about tropical prints is how diverse they are.  They can be playful or very sophisticated and can be worn casual or dressed up. If you’re headed to a far off island or just chillin’ by the pool, a tropical themed ensemble will have you instantly summer ready!

I personally love palm prints and I fell in love with this vintage set when I found it at the thrift store. What’s more tropical than a jungle, right? I decided to accessorize in a jungle inspired tropical look pairing this set with colorful feathers, a mask necklace and a woven clutch.  I love how the rainbow of colors pops off the green background and I think the accessories create an unexpected take on the tropical theme.

Summer of Wanderlust – South Africa Inspired Look Book

When you mention travel to Africa most people’s first thought is a safari.  While I highly recommend going on a safari (it was life changing for me) there is so, so much more to see and do in the many diverse countries that make up this vast continent.  One of my personal favorites is South Africa.

South Africa has made strides to leave its history of repression and racism behind and is slowly evolving into a melting pot of cultural expression. Cosmopolitan cities are set against brilliant natural backdrops and vibrant neighborhoods are alive with music, food and friendship.

What I love most about South Africa is its vibrancy, its color and textures. The distinct geometric painting of the Ndeble tribe, the beaded Zulu necklaces and intricate basket weaving, the modern street art and rainbow hued buildings of the Bo Kaap neighborhood. South Africa is alive and has a pulse all its own.

This travel look book is awash in color and pattern, inspired by the “Rainbow Nation” and its beauty, in all the forms it blesses us.

Summer of Wanderlust – Mexico Inspired Look Book

Living in Southern California, Mexico is right in our backyard which makes sense why it’s the country I have visited the most in all of my travels.  Mexico is a beautiful country with diverse landscapes awash in color from the beaches to the jungles.  What I love most about it is the warmth of the people and the rich culture and tradition.

If you are traveling to Mexico this summer I hope these looks offer you some inspiration on what to pack. Bold prints in a variety of colors will have you ready to stroll the local markets during the day and dancing the night away under the Sonoran sky.

I paired these very vibrant floral prints in breezy light fabrics for the hot days in Mexico.  Paired with warm brown accessories and a striped bag I purchased in Mexico, this is one of my favorite looks.

Getting Summer Vacation Ready at the Thrift Store

I’ve been so excited to share my first collaboration of the Summer of Wanderlust that I did with two amazing ladies, Shana & Edwina, otherwise known as Thrifters Anonymous.  I started following their YouTube channel a couple of years ago and not only are these long time friends hilarious, they know how to find the best deals and on trend pieces at the thrift store.

IMG_6510
Shana & Edwina killin em in vintage sequins – there go to!!

If you’re headed on a trip or just want to strut your stuff at the neighborhood bar-b-que this summer, more than likely you’re looking to get some new wardrobe pieces. The thrift store is the best place to find seasonal, unique clothing for a fraction of the price.  You know, so you have money to do all the other fun stuff this summer!

I personally do almost all my shopping, year round at thrift stores but I thought I would enlist the help of the experts, Shana & Edwina, to give you some pointers on how to get summer ready at the thrift store.

I asked them a few questions below to get you started on your trip to the thrift store!

Q: What are some the summer fashion trends that inspire you?
A: Gtcoth (aka “Get the crap out of the house’) items, i.e., sheer items, flowy tops, iron free dress,  that allow you to get up and go without much work but it looks like it was a lot of work. (Wink)
Q: What summer wardrobe pieces are you looking for at the thrift store?
A: More casual pieces, thin layers, bold monochrome colors.
Q: If you are going on a cruise, or a safari or camping those vacations are completely different. Can you find what you will need for each of those at the thrift store?
A: Totally! With ease.
Q: What is your favorite summer accessory to purchase at the thrift store?
A: Formal wear- especially with sequin.
Q: What is the most common misconception that you’d like to dispel about shopping at the thrift store?
A: There is nothing disgusting about it- and there are tons of gems if you have the time and have an open mind.
Q: Are there any items that shouldn’t be purchased at the thrift store?
A: Not really. There are amazing items new and gently used in each section.
Q: What are the keys to a successful trip to the thrift store?
A: 1. Grab a friend and get your Style inspiration with magazines & shopping list/ budget prep
2. Grab snacks and water and wear workout clothes
3. Start with one section at a time for your first trip. When you feel more comfortable, start with the sections you love or need the most.
4. Time each section so you are not there forever.
5. Grab everything you like but try on everything later regardless of size or brand.
6. Stick to the budget, current weather season and staple pieces. Bahaha, we try!
These ladies are so much fun that I had to visit Vegas to experience thrifting first hand with them.  You can check out Part 1 of our thrifting shenanigans here.
Here are a few of the summer items I picked up on our day of thrifting in Las Vegas and how I styled them when I got home. What do you think?
IMG_6497
I fell in love with the vintage, South Beach vibe of this dress! This was marked $10 and it was 50% the day we were there! Woo Hoo! Side Note: Kinda sad I didn’t buy this hat!
IMG_6498
I wasn’t sure about this jumpsuit because of the bright pink but the ladies convinced me and I’m so glad they did. It was brand new with the tags attached for $15. I thrifted the blazer at Savers for $4 in Vegas while I was there!
IMG_6496
This is a mumu type dress from Indonesia that I found for $4. I loved the print and paired with additional prints and textures in the same color scheme. I wear an XL and this is a size small so be sure to try items on regardless of size.
I hope that these tips and our fun videos help inspire you to visit the thrift store this season for your summer wardrobe. Be sure to tag us @IAMSHEGLOBAL and @taapproved to share what you find! Also, make sure you subscribe to Thrifters Anonymous on Youtube so you don’t miss any of the Shana & Edwina’s thrifting adventures!!

Summer of Wanderlust – Southwest Look Book

I spent my summers in Arizona visiting my grandmother and the southwest holds a special place in my heart. There’s just something about the desert air, the expansive landscapes and breathtaking sunsets that make the American southwest magical.

These outfits are inspired by one of my favorite places where prints, hats and boots reign supreme. Add details of texture, feathers, fringe and turquoise and you are on your way to a southwest summer!

Full disclosure: I know that all of these layers are not exactly summer friendly depending on where you are. I was borderline sweating in some of them taking pictures. I just wanted to share some ideas to inspire you that you can take pieces of and make the looks your own.

The first look below was built around this amazing western vest I thrifted at Goodwill. The blouse is lightweight silk and a perfect top for warm temps. I used warm brown throughout in the bag, earrings and bracelet to pull the look together.  Really, I needed a reason to use this amazing wide brim hat I got on clearance at Charlotte Russe!  I can’t resist a good hat!

IMG_6311

{Jeans/Ross, Blouse/Tolani via The Plus Bus, Vest/Thrifted, Boots/Ami Club Wear, Bag/Marshall’s, Hat/Charlotte Russe, Orange Bracelet/Bought in Kenya, Horse Bracelet/Forever 21, Earrings/Ring/Santee Alley}

IMG_6307

This look is a more casual California/Arizona hybrid of sorts.  I thrifted this skirt in Vegas recently and thought the print and color were quintessential southwest. I paired it with comfy wedges and a pop of green with the accessories. The fedora adds another layer of California cool and pattern to compliment the skirt.

IMG_6290

Ok, so this look was a bit toasty but I really wanted to share this amazing bolero jacket with you!  I found it at the Rose Bowl Flea Market for $3! It’s really more appropriate for fall but can you blame a girl for wanting to share her treasures!

I love the bright orange with the blues and greys.  You could easily take off the jacket and just wear the jean top or vice versa or just wear the sleeveless dress and this outfit would work. Layered necklaces are one of my favorite ways to accessorize and I’m rocking that look here.

IMG_6351

{Jean Shirt/Jacket/Shoes/Thrifted, Dress/Newport News, Bag/Target, Hat/The Left Bank, Short Necklace/from Nepal, Long Necklace/Earrings/Santee Alley}

IMG_6349

This is a classic western look put together with simple wardrobe staples. A white blouse and jeans paired with a southwestern print scarf as a top. You can take any printed scarf (as long as its big enough), throw it over your shoulders and add a belt and you have a sophisticated shawl/jacket look.  I think this is a great alternative to cardigans when you want to wear a light layer and is a wonderful way to get more use out of your scarves.
